Dog License Application

According to New York State law, every dog over four months of age, owned or harbored for longer than 30 days, must be licensed.

How to License Your Dog:

Caroline residents can apply for a dog license at the Town Clerk’s Office, 2668 Slaterville Road, Slaterville Springs, NY, Monday – Thursday between 8AM-2PM or fill out an application and return it to the clerk's office by mail, email: clerk@townofcaroline.org or the Dropbox located to the right of the front door of the Caroline Town Hall Offices building.

After the application and appropriate certificates and fees have been collected, a license (valid for one year) with a permanent identification number and a metal tag will be issued.

How to Renew Your License:

License Renewals are sent to owners by mail at the end of each month before your license is due to expire. If you miss the due date, a friendly reminder notice will be sent. If you have not renewed after 60 days, a delinquent notice will be sent with a deadline to renew to avoid a possible penalty.

Owner must also provide:

• A certificate or written proof from a licensed veterinarian if the dog is spayed/neutered. (this could be noted on a vet bill, which will be accepted as proof)

• All dogs three months of age or older must show proof of a rabies vaccination. If the dog has medical reasons why it cannot receive a rabies vaccination, a certificate or affidavit stating why must be submitted and signed by a licensed veterinarian.

• As of January 1, 2003, satisfactory proof is required for exempt service dogs: guide, war, hearing, police, therapy, or detection. A license is still required but there is no fee collected for any of these service dogs.

• Fees - $22 if unaltered, $10 altered. We also offer a discount for owners over 65 years old. (Caroline is the only municipality in Tompkins County that offers this!!)
